Which Bellydance level or performing group is right for you?

Bellydance levels at Lotus Arts are skill based. We've found that students can be much better served if they are grouped by actual skill level rather than time served.

This system is primarily based on self-assessment, with the teacher having veto power. Students use skills checklists to identify which skills are needed for which level. Obviously these are cumulative. Level 3 students need to maintain all the level 1 and 2 skills as well as master the level 3 skills to advance to level 4. If you have any questions about your abilities in a particular area, please feel free to ask your teacher.

Support is available! The Drills (Technique) class on Mondays at 8pm in Belleville is the ideal place to work on skills. (This class will be offered on Cherokee according to demand, so let us know if you'd be interested!)Students who spend even a few months in this class, working specifically to correct technique issues, make rapid progress in their skills.

If you have any doubts about your ability to progress, or if you just want to be a better dancer, I highly recommend visiting the Drills class. Private lessons can also be scheduled with most instructors for $40/hour.

What if I'm just here to bop around and have fun? Do I have to perform?

Performance -- even the annual student show -- is only for those who think it sounds like fun --Those who aren't interested in studying bellydance as a performance art are absolutely welcome! Stay in a level as long as it's fun for you, try the TurboShimmy class, and you're also welcome to join the technique class and perhaps the Silver Sirens class (though that class does offer some performance elements). All of these operate outside the levels structure completely and just offer a chance to move to music, exercise, and have fun.

Levels Checklists and Performing Group Info

Remember, these are cumulative. If you are considering entering Level 3, you will need to have mastery of the level one AND level two material, for instance.
