Glossary:
Hafla: a casual dance performance party, like our studio parties only with multiple studios participating. A great place to perform your very first solo. Dance spots are often open to nearly everyone who asks. Haflas are loads of fun. Want to dance? Most hafla performances are arranged through your instructor, each studio has a certain number of spots to share among its dancers. But you can also call the event organizer directly if that suits your situation better. For Raks Sharki in St. Louis events, just show up with music and a costume, everyone is welcome to dance.
Saturday class or Sunday class:A class on a special topic, meant to stand alone rather than part of an ongoing series. Like a seminar. 1-2 hours long, low cost, local instructor. Classes are small, informal, friendly, and suitable for all levels.
Workshop: A full day -- or two days -- of class with a world-class instructor who's been flown in for the purpose. Classes are typically larger (20-80 students) and suitable for intermediate (level 3) and above students, or serious level 2 students who want to be challenged and don't mind that they won't be able to do all the moves being taught. Instruction moves quickly, we usually learn an entire choreo in 4 hours.
There's nearly always a show on Saturday featuring the guest instructor and either invited performers (Carbondale) or workshop participants (St. Louis).
